“You can be a fit and healthy young guy, but remember you are not invincible, testicular cancer can happen to any one of us. Check yourself regularly lads, or get your girlfriend or wife to do so, either way it’s not anything to be ashamed of.” Danny Hipkiss

Testicular Awareness Facts

  • Affects men between the ages of 15-45.

  • There are 2000 cases a year in the UK, increasing dramatically with it doubling in the last 30 years, reasons yet unknown.

  • Most common cancer for men aged between 18-30.

  • It occurs more in white affluent males.

  • Up to 1 in 5 men may have and increased risk due to a faulty inherited gene.

  • If it is caught in the early stages you have a 95% chance of being cured.

  • However, men who have previously been diagnosed have a 2 in 5 chance of developing cancer in the contralateral testicular in the 25 years following diagnosis.

Surveys suggest that many men are unaware of testicular cancer or prefer to ignore it and only 5% of men regularly check their testicles. A simple regular self-examination is now known to help detect the early signs and reduce the amount of treatment needed. Examine yourself regularly, at least once a month, for any changes to size, shape or weight of testicles; this is best done after a warm bath or shower. Most lumps found on the testicles are benign but it is important to get checked out by your GP if you notice anything unusual.
